Why Bitcoin?: Structure and Efficiency of Markets for Online Game Currency

Sukwon Thomas Kim
University of California, Riverside

December 18, 2013

Abstract:
Multi-player online games have own virtual currencies. These game currencies are similar to other virtual currencies like Bitcoin, in that both of the currencies are created and managed by non-government entities. Competitions in multi-player online games naturally formed markets that exchanges game currency with real currency. These markets have liquidity and efficiency comparable to that of US major stock exchanges and the markets tightly connects virtual economies with real economies. With the markets, game currencies have a larger potential than other virtual currencies to substitute some of real currencies

Bots / Responsible Botting...
« on: April 08, 2014, 03:54:06 AM »
A lot of people are vehemently against bots in any form. It seems a bit silly to me as it's just not possible to stop bots, so it might be better to simply figure out what makes sense.

At the moment we have a situation where at least 1 botter is controlling parts of the map to the detriment of the game. To me, this seems like hunting on a piece of land until every animal has become extinct there, or fishing until there are no more fish in the lake. Eventually you're going to starve...

The fact is that it is possible to completely usurp the map and drive out all players. This would certainly kill the game and drive the price of HUC to zero, which would result in miners abandoning Huntercoin. i.e. There has to be some kind of a balance between what makes sense for botters, and how botters can leave room for human players to play and enjoy the game.

Now, what that balance is, I don't really know, but I do know that it doesn't make sense for 1 botter (or a small number of players/botters) to dominate the game to the point that it isn't fun for anyone else.

On the other hand, I also think that it could be very profitable for botters to prey on other botters in order to maintain a kind of balance that would draw in more players and result in a better game.

Bots / READ ME - BOTS
« on: April 08, 2014, 03:40:04 AM »
This subforum is for discussions about bots & botting.

Part of the purpose is to help botters & people discuss how they can cooperate responsibly to make the game fun for everyone.

Trading HUC / HUC volume at Polo well over 14,400 per day now
« on: April 05, 2014, 05:09:10 AM »
The volume at Polo is now well over 14,400 (the number of coins mined per day).

That means that sellers will run out of steam. We could be looking at a turn around sometime soon.

Don't flat out buy up into the sell orders - place orders & let the sellers sell down into the buy depth and run out of energy. Draw them down further and exhaust them.

Volume for the last 24 hours is about 25,000.

Development / Fee structures for moves?
« on: April 04, 2014, 07:41:58 PM »
This is in some ways related to the Natural Disasters thread...

Should fees for moves could be imposed to punish botters with shitty algos that bloat the waypoints list and spam the blockchain?

e.g. The A* linearization (path waypoint compression) creates a nicely optimized list of waypoints. However, some botters have lists that are incredibly long, and that include every point along the path. I've seen paths over 600 waypoints long. So, consider the A* waypoint list the basis for the "flat fee", and then the difference in the number of points costing more. Probably a linear scale wouldn't work so well, and an increasingly expensive cost might work better to deter blockchain spam. That might be something along the lines of:

a) 0.001 for 1 to 10 extra waypoints,
b) 0.010 for 10 to 100 waypoints,
c) 0.100 for 100 to 1000 waypoints,

All calculated per waypoint. So:

a) 10 extra = 0.010 (0.001 * 10)
b) 100 extra = 1.000 (0.010 * 100)
c) 1000 extra = 100 (0.100 * 1000)
d) 200 extra = 20 (0.100 * 200) -- compare to b & c

Clearly 100 to 1000 extra moves is incredibly inefficient and far too costly.  Up to 100 extra is likely too costly, but possible.

That's just an example of 1 possibility though. Humans are unlikely to want to create 100+ waypoints, but this is easy for a bot to do.

The numbers I've used there are WRONG to use. They're purely an example. e.g. Moving from 1,1 to 501,501 on the map takes about 27 waypoints or so according to the A* linearization used in the game.

Here's a real example of a bot waypoint list:

The bolded moves are completely unnecessary. They are spam. (There may be more - but those are obvious spam.)
